They say that if you want to have a successful business today than you're going to need to have a presence on the Internet. And while it's all well and good to give some of your marketing budget over to a firm to create a website for you, you're also likely going to want to know how well it's doing in terms of customer traffic and where it's ranked among the most popular search engines. Because even if you have an amazing website selling the Baxi boiler or new spring fashions, it's still not going to be doing you all that much good if no one can find it.
PageRank is a Google tool used to determine the importance of a webpage. It's one of the main ways that this search engine decides which websites are going to get to the top of the list when you search for a car service from JFK to NJ and which are still going to fall somewhere on page five. Before Google came along, the majority of search engines simply ranked sites based on their word density for keywords that had to do with that website's content. But that meant that a site could just post pages with the same keywords over and over again and receive a higher rank than a Bahco tools site, for example, that was actually much more useful to customers.
When Google co-founders created PageRank, it was meant to measure a websites importance based on the number of links that site receives from outside sources. It also attempts to go a step further than this by factoring in the importance of the website that is providing the link. For example, if your website that sells lead-lined gypsum board is mentioned on a construction company's website that would be more valuable than if it was mentioned on a site about traveling through Europe on a budget.
While PageRank is one of the main ways that Google decides where a website fits and how important it is, this is not the only method that they use to evaluate your content. They are still looking at the pages that you're putting on your site and how much they relate to music recording or preform bands, depending on which industry you might be working in. This is why it's important to have a balanced online marketing plan that includes building up your own site while making the most of outside sources.
